The original Monongahela House opened in 1839 and burned in the great Pittsburgh fire of 1845. This structure was built in its place two years later and became a favorite of travelers from around the world. Among its famous guests were Stephen Foster, Charles Dickens, the Prince of Wales (later to become Kin Edward the Seventh) and, on February 14, 1861, Abraham Lincoln. . It was a five-story structure of magnificent grandeur for those days, unequaled by any other hotel west of New York.
